About the Omega Constellation Watch

The Omega Constellation truly is defined by the stars, with a case back with an observatory with eight stars above it, four claws, a golden star on the dial and an integrated band. The eight stars symbolise six first-place awards won between 1933 and 1952 and two chronometer records – where Omega set world records for precision at the Kew-Teddington, Neuchatel and Geneva Observatories.

The Constellation collection is a symbol of elegance and precision, introduced in 1952 with a more classic look but over time it was replaced by a sportier design. The first ‘era’ of the Omega Constellation is called the ‘Pie-Pan Era’. These were classified as having a more dome-shaped dial with the outermost area between the hour marker split into 12 facets. The hands were rounded in shape, and the movements were automatic with centre-second and faceted crowns.

From this era we saw the Omega Globemaster, which is part of this collection but due to its retro 60’s design it became its own, and it was even the world’s first watch to receive the Master Chronometer certification. Top models of this collection were seen with an annual calendar and Sedna gold, which is Omega’s rose gold alloy.

The ‘C-Shape Era’ was Omega Constellation’s third execution of the collection in 1964. This was supposed to become a design revolution of the line-up by Gérald Genta. The C-Shape Omega Constellation watches featured a new case shape, cleaner dial with slim baton hands and jet markers.

After these two eras we saw the more modern Omega Constellation look which is what we all know it for - the small grip claw marks and the golden star on the dial. Omega Constellation Models

Because of the different eras within the Omega Constellation collection, there are quite a few references and models. As well, over the years Omega used a few different types of numbering systems, so there is a lot of overlap and variants.

Within the Pie-Pan Era you can find a lot of vintage Omega Constellation models like the Constellation Deluxe, Constellation Grand Luxe, and Constellation II Deluxe Calendar. These Omega Constellation watches use the same movements, but they were often found with a gold bracelet. The Grand Luxe model came with an Omega Reinhor ‘brick’ bracelet which is as opulent as a gold Omega Constellation watch. Some references you might find in this era are not limited to but listed from Ref. 2852- Ref. 167.008.

During the C-Shape Era in the 60s we see simpler designs but a wider variety of case shapes as well as integrated bracelets which fit into slots in the case. In the 1970’s the development of quartz watch technology saw Omega Constellation utilise these movements in models like the Constellation Electroquartz and models using LED and LCD. References seen in the C-Shape Era include everything from Ref. 168.009 to but aren’t limited to Ref. 368.0847.

The modern Omega Constellation was released in 1982, known as the Constellation Manhattan. These models show a sportier design with claws at 3 and 9 markets that resemble small grips. Other features include Roman numerals on the dial, as well as a golden star. Today, the Omega Constellation collection has been evolving and while keeping its stunning look, the calibres and Chronometers have been improved for precision, such as the Co-Axial and Master Chronometer models.
